History:After the Wutai War, Zack is sent to Wutai with Angeal and Sephiroth to learn what has become of the SOLDIERs under Genesis. They find that Genesis has turned his back on Shinra, and has to be stopped at all costs.
After the mission, Zack inherits the Buster Sword that belonged to Angeal. He is assigned to Nibelheim with Sephiroth to investigate the nearby Mako reactor. They are accompanied by two soldiers, one being Zack's future friend, Cloud Strife. While in the town, Sephiroth visits the Shinra Mansion and discovers documents that he misinterprets. These lead him to believe that he is the son of Jenova, and that she was an Ancient.
Sephiroth goes insane and destroys the town, killing most of its people. Zack goes to the Mako reactor and fights Sephiroth in a duel, but after a lengthy battle, Sephiroth defeats him. Sephiroth enters the deepest part of the reactor, approaching a stasis tank that contains Jenova. Suddenly, Cloud appears behind him with the Buster Sword and stabs him.
Cloud tries to leave, but Sephiroth emerges from the inner reactor with Jenova's severed head. This time, Cloud is stabbed by Sephiroth's Masamune, but he is able to knock Sephiroth down. Sephiroth falls to his apparent death. Cloud and Zack are captured and experimented on, and they attempt to escape. Zack heads to his hometown, but is confronted by Genesis and a visibly degenerating Dr. Hollander. Genesis stole some of Zack's hair for its "S" or "Jenova" cells; since Sephiroth was "killed," only Cloud and Zack now carry the S cells. Dr. Hollander tells Zack that he will take Cloud. A white-haired Angeal prevents this, and Zack defeats Hollander.
Zack talks to the white-haired Angeal and discovers that he is a copy of the original Angeal. He reveals himself to be Larzard, the missing head executive of SOLDIER. He was injected with Angeal's cells, which caused him to become a clone. Zack asks what their next move should be, and Larzard says they need to find Genesis. Zack realizes that Genesis is hiding in his hometown, and finds him in a crystal cave. Genesis reveals what his true intention was, and he transforms into a giant knight. Zack defeats Genesis, and he changes back to his original self to fight Zack again. After being defeated again, Genesis sees the goddess Minerva and offers his hand to her, but she refuses and leaves. Zack exits the cave with Genesis to find Cloud and Larzard. Larzard tells him that he fought off the Shinra soldiers to protect Cloud, and then he dies. Genesis tells Zack that Angeal's dream has come true. Soon after, Zack finds a letter from Aerith nearby. The letter says that it has been four years since she last saw Zack, and that this is her final, eighty-ninth letter to him. Zack is confused, and he realizes that he and Cloud were in the Shinra mansion for four years. A Shinra chopper approaches, so Zack escapes with Cloud, leaving Genesis behind.
In Midgar, Tseng orders the Turks to find Zack before the Shinra soldiers do, hoping to save them. When they approach the Wastelands, Zack hides Cloud and prepares to fight. In the final battle, Zack is mortally wounded in the chest. Soon after, Cloud snaps out of his vegetative state, but he still has Mako poisoning. He approaches Zack, who pulls Cloud's head to his chest, then gives him the Buster Sword and tells him that he is the proof of his existence. Zack then dies, and Cloud, realizing what has happened, literally screams out in anguish. Even with a huge burden on his heart, he later thanks Zack and bids him farewell, and he takes the Buster Sword and walks toward Midgar, seeking work as a mercenary as Zack said he intended to do. In the end, Zack's body is picked up by a man with a white wing
